What You Need

  • Windows PC
  • Microsoft Power Apps access
  • Power Platform environment
  • Permission to create/edit Canvas Apps
  • .NET SDK 10.0 or later
  • Claude Code

Required Downloads

Claude Code:

https://claude.com/download

.NET SDK:

https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download

STEP 1 — Install / Verify .NET SDK

Open PowerShell and run:

dotnet --version

You should see version 10.0.x or later.

For example:

10.0.400

STEP 2 — Install Claude Code

If Claude Code is not already installed, open PowerShell and run:

irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex

After installation, close PowerShell and open a new PowerShell window.

Verify the installation:

claude --version

You should see a Claude Code version such as 2.x.x.

STEP 3 — Start Claude Code

Run:

claude

Important: The following slash commands must be executed inside Claude Code, not directly at the normal PowerShell prompt.

STEP 4 — Add Microsoft Power Platform Skills

Inside Claude Code, run:

/plugin marketplace add microsoft/power-platform-skills

Claude should confirm that the marketplace was successfully added.

STEP 5 — Install the Canvas Apps Plugin

Run:

/plugin install canvas-apps@power-platform-skills

If Claude asks where to install it, select:

Install for you (user scope)

The installation should complete and the Canvas Apps plugin should become active.

STEP 6 — Open Your Power Apps Canvas App

Open Microsoft Power Apps in your browser and open the Canvas App that you want Claude to create or modify.

Make sure the application is open inside Power Apps Studio.

STEP 7 — Enable Coauthoring

Inside Power Apps Studio:

  1. Open App Settings
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Open Updates
  4. Turn Coauthoring ON

Keep Power Apps Studio open while configuring Claude.

STEP 8 — Copy the Power Apps Studio URL

Copy the complete URL from your browser address bar while the Canvas App is open in Power Apps Studio.

For example:

https://make.powerapps.com/environments/.../apps/...

Do not manually modify the URL.

STEP 9 — Configure Canvas MCP

Go back to Claude Code and run:

/configure-canvas-mcp

When Claude asks for the Designer / Power Apps Studio URL, paste the URL you copied from Power Apps Studio.

The configuration can extract the required environment, app and cluster information from the URL.

STEP 10 — Authenticate

Follow any Microsoft sign-in or permission prompts.

Use the Microsoft account that has permission to create or edit the Canvas App in your Power Platform environment.

STEP 11 — Test the Connection

Before asking Claude to make major changes, first ask it to inspect your application.

Use this prompt:

Connect to my Power Apps Canvas App and inspect the current application.

Tell me:

  1. App name
  2. Screens
  3. Controls on each screen
  4. Data sources
  5. Existing Power Fx formulas
  6. Any errors or issues you find

Do not modify anything yet.

STEP 12 — Test a Small Edit

Once the connection works, test a simple modification.

Use this prompt:

Add a label to the Home screen.

Text:

"Expense Management"

Place it at the top of the screen.

Do not modify anything else.

Go back to Power Apps Studio and confirm that the label appears.

If the label appears, your Claude to Power Apps connection is working correctly.

Useful Claude Canvas App Commands

/configure-canvas-mcp

Configure the Canvas App Authoring MCP connection.

/generate-canvas-app

Generate a new Canvas App from a natural-language description.

/edit-canvas-app

Edit an existing Canvas App using natural-language instructions.

Master Inspection Prompt

Inspect my current Power Apps Canvas App.

Do not modify anything yet.

Report:

  • App name
  • Environment
  • Screens
  • Controls
  • Data sources
  • Galleries and forms
  • Important Power Fx formulas
  • Current errors
  • Current layout structure
  • Opportunities to improve responsiveness

After inspection, wait for my instructions.

Build the Expense Management Application

Now we can start building the application screen-by-screen.

The application will have three main roles:

  • Employee
  • Manager / Approver
  • HR / Admin

The expense statuses will be:

  • Pending
  • Approved
  • Rejected
  • Paid

STEP 1 — Build Dashboard

Copy and paste this prompt into Claude Code:

Build only the Dashboard screen.

Use the existing master requirements.

Create:

  • Header
  • Sidebar
  • Welcome message
  • 5 KPI cards
  • Recent expenses gallery

Use responsive auto-layout containers.

Do not modify other screens.

STEP 2 — Build Submit Expense

Build only the Submit Expense screen.

Use existing EMExpenses data source.

Fields:

Expense Date

Category

Description

Amount

Receipt

Employee name/email should come from User().

Buttons:

Save Draft

Submit

Cancel

Submit should create Status = Pending.

Use responsive containers.

Do not modify other screens.

STEP 3 — Build My Expenses

Build only My Expenses.

Show the current user's expenses from EMExpenses.

Add:

Search

Status filter

Expense gallery

Status badge

View Details

Use:

EmployeeEmail = User().Email

Do not modify Dashboard or Submit Expense.

STEP 4 — Build Manager Approval

Build only My Approvals.

Show:

ManagerEmail = User().Email

Status = Pending

Add:

View

Approve

Reject

Approve → Status Approved

Reject → require rejection reason and set Status Rejected.

Do not modify other screens.

STEP 5 — Build HR / Admin

Build only All Expenses for HR/Admin.

Show all expenses with:

Employee

Date

Category

Amount

Status

Manager

Approved By

Paid By

Add search and status filter.

Add Mark as Paid only when Status = Approved.

Do not modify other screens.

Why Use Claude with Power Apps?

Traditional Power Apps development can require manually creating containers, galleries, forms, controls and Power Fx formulas.

With Claude Code connected to Power Apps, you can describe what you want using natural language and let Claude assist with creating and modifying the Canvas App.

This can make prototyping and application development significantly faster while still allowing the developer to review and control every change.

Important: Build Screen-by-Screen

One of the most important techniques is to avoid asking Claude to change the entire application at once.

Instead, work one screen at a time.

For example:

Build only the Dashboard screen.

Do not modify other screens.

Then verify the result in Power Apps Studio before moving to the next screen.

This makes it easier to identify issues and prevents unwanted changes to existing functionality.

Troubleshooting

Claude command is not recognized

Close PowerShell and open a new PowerShell window.

Then run:

claude --version

If Claude is installed under:

%USERPROFILE%.local\bin

but the command is not recognized, add this folder to your User PATH and reopen PowerShell.

Canvas MCP Cannot Connect

Check the following:

  • Canvas App is open in Power Apps Studio
  • Coauthoring is enabled
  • You copied the current Power Apps Studio URL
  • You are signed in with the correct Microsoft account
  • Your account has permission to edit the Canvas App

Final Result

By following this setup, you can connect Claude Code with Power Apps and use AI-assisted development to build an Expense Management application.

The final application can include:

  • Dashboard
  • My Expenses
  • Submit Expense
  • My Approvals
  • All Expenses
  • Expense Details
  • Role-based access
  • Approval workflow
  • Expense status tracking
  • Responsive UI

Conclusion

Claude Code combined with Power Apps provides an interesting way to accelerate Canvas App development using natural-language instructions.

The key is to first configure the connection correctly, test it with a small change, and then build the application step-by-step using focused commands.

Start with the setup, connect Claude to Power Apps, and then let AI help you build your application.

Note: Canvas Apps integration and related Microsoft features may be in preview, so commands, capabilities and Power Apps Studio UI may change over time.
